Super Guni-Guni

Captain America - Steve Rogers
Superman - Clark Kent
Batman - Bruce Wayne
Green Lantern - Hal Jordan
The Hulk - Bruce Banner
Iron Man - Anthony Stark
Red Maskman - Benj Ramos

They are all but fiction.

Pero aminin natin, we still have this inkling hope na sana nga, totoo sila.

We need them at this point in time.

Sa pelikulang Pinoy, superheroes are somewhat satiric. Parang isang joke. Pati yung kalaban parang joke rin. It has something to do siguro sa pagiging masayahin ng Pinoy. We want a serious matter be presented in a lighter approach.

Meron dyan, finding his true identity or finding the purpose of his existence. They are created to represent the hopes, aspirations and desperation of people for peace, prosperity and human essence.

Panandaliang tumatakbo tayo sa problema by watching these hero films. Since nagaganap ito sa isang isolated area, Pinoys also tend to isolate themselves from the real world to the imaginary universe that these films have created. We relate our crisis while inside that fictional world. Lahat guni guni. Resulta, false hope.

Nung 2003, nung hindi pa magkakilala si Bong Revilla at Janet Napoles, bumida siya sa Captain Barbell movie which became the top grossing MMFF entry in that year. Tingin nyo, bakit naging box office si Teng despite poor reviews from movie critics? Andyan yung comment na masyadong matanda na raw si Ogie Alcasid sa role na Enteng and Bong Revilla didnt fit the role of Captain Barbell as compared to Herbert Bautista several pork barrel scams back. May kinalaman marahil ang Oakwood mutiny on that same year. I was in Makati when the mutiny happened and i saw the huge tanks and trucks right before my eyes. Who do you wanna call in times like these? Guess what? They came. Darna and Lastik both showed up in the Captain Barbell movie.

Enteng Kabisote 1 had reference in kidnapping issues (when Santana kidnaps Faye) and environmental issue (water dam crisis). These issues were possible call-for-attention to the coming president of our country during that time. Remember, 2004 we held the National Presidential Elections kung saan naluklok si Ate Glo. Si Santana, played by Bing Loyzaga is a super villain who wants to rule the world with her evil intentions. Pero siyempre just like the typical superhero films should end, the good must win over the evil. Malinaw na representation ito ng aspiratoon of Filipinos for a good leader of the country.

Fast forward to 2006 (insert fast forward sound effect here), which i think was one of the tragic years for Filipinos on the 21st century. We had the Wowowee stampede earlier that year, then Mt Mayon eruption sometime August and Guimaras oil spill right after. Ang lala. We needed rescuers.

It might symbolize the aspiration of Pinoys for a better armed forces. This was in relation to the recapture of Marine Capt Nicanor Faeldon in January 2006 who escaped in Philippine Army last December 2005.

Excuse me muna kay Bebe Gandanghari.

And on the same year, the TV series version of Darna came out. Parehong matapang at maka-masa. But despite Darna's powers, she has shown sign of weakness. She is vulnerable to confusion, emotional breakdown and even sickness. There was a part on the series when Narda had a hard time whether to accept the moral and social responsibility. Pano na kaya kung di niya tinanggap ang offer na maging unpaid employee of defending the world?

The first casualty of H1N1 virus was reported in the same year as well as the declaration of Martial Law in Maguindanao. Though Darna almost declined the responsibility, she accepted it anyway.

These superheros have special skills, agility and strength that a normal person cannot posses. Limitless sila sa mga pwedeng gawin to save the earth, to defend the people, to help the needy, to achieve justice and to beat the evil. Sila yung pinapangarap nating maging tayo, or atleast maging katuwang natin sa buhay. Sila ay nabuo out of our hopes, aspiration and frustration of peace, prospherity and security.
